For those of us who have owned or collected these historical religious artifacts of faith and devotion, this Antique French Engraved Nun's Cross is unlike any I have seen. I purchased this from one of my contacts in the Netherlands and feel so fortunate to have found it!
Dated and signed to commemorate her religious commitment, this one has engraving on both sides- with the cross itself imbedded in a decorative gold bezel of unknown metal content. It is engraved with "C. Knabe" and "2 Feb. 1859" on the front and an engraved Flaming Sacred Heart. On the reverse is "Congi Lier" (referring most likely to either St. Gummarus Church or St. Margaret's Church in Lier, Belgium) and "Jubelf 1859-85" referring to the period of "Dutch Jubilation" in Belgium (1859-1885) which was a period of political tension and change. It followed the revolution of 1830, which resulted in Belgium separating from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. What an amazing piece!
Shown in photo #2 layered with another ALTaeRation piece- sold separately and shown for layering possibilities!
